If you’ve been around the woodworking community lately, you’ve probably noticed everyone is making the same wooden Christmas trees. They look great—but if you want your projects to stand out, sell better, or make truly memorable gifts, it’s time to put your own spin on them.

In this post (and the video below 👇), I’ll show you how to take the classic wooden Christmas tree design and add creative variations that make it personal, meaningful, and unique.

✝️ Add Meaning With a Wooden Cross

When most people think of Christmas, they think about the tree—but what about the Christ in Christmas?
A simple way to make your project more meaningful is to add a wooden cross to your tree.

You can attach a small cross to the center using wood glue or even cut a cross into the center before assembling your tree. I prefer to make a clean half-lap joint so the cross sits flat and looks professional. If you need help with that technique, I have a full tutorial linked below.

📸 Turn It Into a Personalized Photo Holder

Want to make your Christmas trees extra special? Try gluing a clothespin near the top to hold a photo.
You can choose from:

  • A full-size clothespin for a rustic look
  • A medium one for balance
  • Tiny Dollar Tree clothespins for a subtle touch

This variation turns a simple decoration into a personalized keepsake — perfect for gifts, family photos, or craft fair sales.

🎨 Add Color Contrast With Stain

One of the easiest ways to make your trees pop is with contrasting stain colors.
Before assembling your tree, stain the border pieces one color and the center a different shade.
Try a dark espresso on the outer frame and a lighter tone inside (or vice versa). Painting or staining before assembly saves you the headache of trying to “cut in” tight lines later.

Pro Tip: When closing stain lids, place a rag over the can first to prevent splatter. Simple trick — big difference!

🌟 Extra Creative Ideas

  • Cut-Out Cross: Instead of gluing one on, cut the shape into your tree before assembly.
  • Hanging Ornament: Drill a small hole at the top and tie a string to hang a miniature ornament.
  • Double-Sided Design: Paint one side like a Christmas tree and the other like candy corn for a reversible Christmas/Halloween decoration.

There are endless ways to make these your own. Mix and match colors, stains, and attachments until you find your favorite combination.
